Natural Hair Is A Big Win on Oscar Night
I made a double take when I saw this beautiful woman wearing her natural on the red carpet. At first, I did not recognize her, I wondered who is this new face in Hollywood or should I say new hair in Hollywood. The smile....that was the give away that it is Viola Davis. I am especially proud because she is from my neck of the woods—Rhode Island. I was visiting Providence, RI on Oscar night and I must say Rhode Islanders are raising their feathers in great pride for her success. She is a big winner in my eyes. Wearing natural hair in a Hollywood culture that celebrates black women in wigs, weave and straighten hair is a brave thing to do. We all should extend congratulations to her for being free to wear her own hair. Davis attributed her bravery to wear her natural 'do to the encouragement of her loving husband Julius Tennon, who "told me to step into who I am," she said.
The Best Actress Oscar nominee also confessed that her natural hair has given her a thrilling new feeling. It gives me a thrilling new feeling as well, and I can only hope she sets a trend that other black women in Hollywood can follow.
She looked smashing in her red nu-fro and stunning green Vera Wang gown. I think it was a great choice and on behalf of natural and soon to be natural sisters we give you the “freedom hair” award. This image award will last a lifetime and make many of us feel proud when we look back in history to see timeless “real” Hollywood hair. Way to go Viola!
