Activist Taalib-Din Uqdah, referred to by braiders nationwide as the "Godfather of Braids", is the founder and president of the American Hair Braiders & Natural Haircare Association (AHNHA). Uqdah earned his reputation by successfully organizing braider, locktician, and natural hair providers to fight cosmetology boards and giants of government regulatory agencies that harassed and jailed braiders for operating braid, lock, and natural hair businesses. As a result of Uqdah's grassroots lobbying and consulting efforts, landmark legislation was passed and Federal lawsuits were won that freed hair braiders in many states from outdated cosmetology laws that hindered their cultural practice. An entrepreneur for more than 25 years, Uqdah is in charge of marketing, mail order and internet business for Cornrows & Co. When he is not traveling around the country to fight on behalf of braiders, he is lecturing on the politics of hair and economic liberty. Uqdah is often consulted for his expertise by federal and state judges in their published legal opinions and interviewed for major news stories throughout the country. He has been featured in many newspapers such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. Television appearances include: BET and ABC's 20/20.
